Scott Avenges Last Year’s Semi-Final Loss With 69-57 Win Over The Mustangs

Postgame Report and Broadcast Replay

Mustangs vs Scott
37th District Semi-Finals
February 21, 2022

Our showdown game with Scott began contentiously with a tie, and six lead changes before our Mustangs were able to establish a lead, building a 16-10 advantage, and drawing a Scott Eagles time out.  At that point, momentum jumped into a Scott uniform, as they outscored our guys 26-14, allowing them to overtake our Mustangs early in the second period, and open a 36-30 lead at the half.  A 10-5 Brossart run to start the second half made it a one-point game at 41-40 Eagles, with 3:26 to play in the quarter.  Scott finished out the period, answering on a 7-2 heater, reestablishing a six point 48-42 lead with 8 minutes remaining in our season. Our last major effort to overtake the Eagles occurred with 5:28 remaining in the game, when we closed the gap to 53-49, but the Eagles were up to the task, drawing off to win 69-57, dropping the curtain on our 2022-23 Boys Basketball season, with a 13-16 record.  Logan Woosley was named to the All-Tournament team.  While we are disappointed in the result, we have never questioned this team’s effort and hard work ethic.  On the night we were led by Mason Sepate and Anthony Kruse with 14 points, and Brandon Bezold, who knocked home a trio of 3s with 11.  Scott was led by Brayden Howell with 20.  The Eagles will play Campbell County in the 37th District Championship game Thursday evening at 7pm.

Games that end seasons and careers are always tough. but this one is especially tough, not only because it ended the careers of a tight knit group of seniors and, what I will call, associate seniors, (guys who played with these seniors over the past four years) passing out of my life, but it was tough seeing Mason Sepate come up short in his quest for the 1,000 Points Club, finishing with 986 points, giving him cause to carry a lifelong grudge against the  the Lewis County Lions who cancelled on us last weekend.  Mason was a major contributor for three years, and shared the ball with guys such as Stephen Verst, Carson Schirmer, and David Govan, and the present seniors who were also prolific scorers.  These guys were all “Brossart kind of kids”, which tells me that they will continue to be around the program, and according to their senior interviews, will propagate our program with future Brossart Mustangs of their own.

We will now hitch our wagon to the Lady Stangs who will play for a District championship tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7pm versus the Scott Lady Eagles, and will play in next week’s 10th Region Girls Tournament at the Mason County Fieldhouse.
