Both boys and girls soccer are headed to Frankfort on Saturday, 9/25
With their win over the ‘Breds of Newport Catholic on September 8th, the BBHS girls punched their State ticket to compete next weekend in Frankfort. As of now, game time is scheduled for 11:00am vs. Bethlehem. This will be their best competition to date, with Bethlehem positing only 1 loss (3-0 to Lexington Catholic) and 13 wins.
The girls are currently 10-5 and have outscored their opponents 51-17. Stop by the MAC on Monday 9/20 to watch them take on the Crusaders of St. Henry. JV @6:00pm and Varsity at 7:30pm. Both games will also be available on the NFHS Network.
The boys team held the Beechwood Tigers to just one goal on Saturday, while scoring three of their own…sending the BBHS boys to Frankfort as well. They’ll face Prestonburg, who defeated Menifee County 6-0 on Saturday, 9/18. Game time for Saturday is set for 1:00pm.
In today’s game vs. Beechwood, you guessed it…Sophomore Tyler Smith added to his team-leading goal total by scoring his 13th goal just 4 minutes and 39 seconds into the game. He received a quick pass from Junior Colin Ratcliff who stole the ball from the Tigers defense at the 20 yard line. Smith’s goal rolled over the keeper’s fingertips and into the back of the net. The 1-0 score would also be the halftime score.
It took quite a while for the Mustangs to find the goal again, on a hot September Saturday with field temps reaching the high 90 degree mark (maybe higher). Tyler Smith gained control at the 50 yard line and sent a long pass through the defense, which found the feet of Senior Tyler Twehues. Tyler hit the nitro button, blew by the defense and blasted a shot passed the keeper with 13:57 left in the game.
With 11 minutes to go, the Tigers sent the ball out of bounds, setting up a Mustang throw-in from the 5 yard line. Coach Schaeffer knew just who to send into the game. Junior Logan Woosley, who is known for his super human throws, sent the ball to the middle of the box and found Junior Ivan Rodero Lopez in full-Superman mode. Ivan’s diving header put the Mustangs up 3-0.
Beechwood took only 19 seconds from the next kickoff to find Freshman Andric Aguilar at the 30 yard line. Aguilar sent a prayer passed Junior goalkeeper Logan Rauen, who made several great stops throughout the game.
Neither team scored in the final 10 minutes, but the win extends the Mustang win streak to 8 games. The boys are also 10-5 on the season. UPDATE: The 9/21 game vs. Ballard has been canceled.
On a side note, our boys JV squad fought a difficult battle against Highlands on 9/17 in the JV Regionals, but came up short.
